Fashion

Creator: Christopher Breward | Art - 2003-06-26

An exploration of the world of fashion covers history, production, design, innovation, advertising, psychology, geography, and influence.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Following 150 years of fashion, Christopher Breward offers a catholic view of this colorful and flamboyant universe, describing its trends, products, and inhabitants. From Haute Couture, High Street, and developing fabric technology to such stars of the fashion heavens as Coco Chanel, Giorgio Armani, and Alexander McQueen, Breward explores territories far beyond style and function. He sees more than just an industry, giving voice to the larger cultural phenomenon fashion has become.Breward's discerning view captures the glamorous world of Vogue and advertising; the relationship between fashion and film, and fashion as a business; and goes beyond the surface to consider individual interaction with fashion. How have ideas about hygiene and comfort influenced the direction of style? How does dress create identity and status? Framing details of dandies, flappers, and punks within a clear overview of their respective periods, Breward takes a second look and casts everyday wear in a much different light. In addition to all the glitz and glamour, the book includes suggestions for further reading, a timeline marking important events in fashion, and a list of relevant museums and galleries. In all, it is the most valuable, accessible, and modern text on fashion today.

About this book
Until recently, fashion was considered the "F-word" in intellectual circles, dismissed as unworthy of serious attention. Yet no area of life, no individual moment, stands outside fashion's discourses. Intuitively, we all know that clothing is a language, incessesantly communicating messages about its wearer. But who speaks this language, to whom it is addressed, what does it mean, and how are its meanings established and tranformed? On Fashion explores the ways our material, political, psychological, sexual, even intellectual lives are woven into fashion's fabric. This stimulating collection of essays explores fashion's symbolic and figurative functions in photography, cinema, and video; in consumerism, postmodernism, and feminism; in political and material culture; and in self-definition and subjectivity. They demonstrate the pervasive reach of fashion and its expressions. The collection contains over sixty photographs and illustrations and includes essays by Barbara Brodman, Mary Ann Caws, Helene Cixous, Linda Benn DeLibero, Diana Fuss, Cheryl Herr, Karla Jay, Deborah Jenson, Douglas Kellner, Ingeborg Majer O'Sickey, Leslie W. Rabine, Andrew Ross, Sonia Rykiel, Carol Shloss, Kaja Silverman, Maureen Turim, and Iris Marion Young.

encyclopedic, heavily illustrated history of fashion from 1860s to the present

"Fashion - 150 Years" is an encyclopedic work, not only in content but in size and weight. Fashion is taken from about the mid 1800s to the present. Seeling locates the beginnings of modern fashion about 1860 when the English clothing designer Charles Frederick Worth working in Paris put labels with his signature on the gowns he designed. Seeling sees this as turning clothing--however ornamental, stylized, or individualized--into art--Worth was the first "fashion designer."Since Worth's innovative touch, there have been scores of outstanding fashion designers--all of whom make their appearance. The history of fashion from the mid 1860s is related in terms of profiles of the leading, most imaginative and skilled, most influential, and often most acclaimed fashion designers accompanied by abundant photographic material. One could follow the history just by following the copious, most color photographs. One sees how fashion spread out from its beginnings in Paris to the... 5/5 Henry Berry "Henry Berry" (Southport, CT) - See all my reviews, January 10, 2011

Fantastic on any bookshelf or as a substantial gift!

I love this book! On its own it looks fantastic on any bookshelf, delve into the pages and this book unfolds the secrets and stories behind fashion designers. The style and layout of the content reminds me of those autobiography-type magazine articles. These photos are fantastic and openly displays the variety of fashion from the cute and inspiring, to the odd and very abstract! The photographs are really well spaced and nicely breaks up the very informative text. An excellent reference book with interesting and little-known facts about these designers. 5/5 SocialDeb - See all my reviews This review is from: FASHION: 150 Years of Couturiers, Designers, Labels (Hardcover) I love this book! This is Great

This book is a great blend of history, factoids and advice, covering a wide spectrum of fashion from the go-go boot to the corset.I have never discovered anything like this before and would deffinately recommend it to anyone interested in fashion, whether it is a fashion student or someone trying to improve the contents of their own closet. 5/5 Patrick L. I really love clothes

This book has given me a new perspective and puts a rich history into the things I wear everyday. A detailed clothing bible if you will, this book covers every type of fashion trend, including hot pants, all the way to every accesory or shoe one could want to know about. It gives hot new trends and old classic styles their names, talking about where things really originiated, making me feel more informed about fashion and even sound smarter! :) All in all this is a great book and a MUST have if you spend as much time as me choosing my outfit everyday! 4/5 Gail Weinstein (San Francisco) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2008

    Ehh...ok

This book as decent, it's great if you're looking to know types of pants or types of collars, but I was hoping to learn more. Most of it consisted of things anyone would know. A platform shoe, a sports bra, a vest. Simple articles of clothing people wear all the time made this book very generic and not very imformative to someone aspiring to learn more about fashion and what makes it work. However, the one feature I loved was where it described who made it to begin with, and who made it hot. If you're looking for fashion history this book could be quite useful. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for. 3/5 Peri - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) When the fashionista marches to the beat of her own drum

This book is a better approach to fashion for girls in a lot of ways. The book itself is heavy on what appear to be recycled materials, and the text and graphics are in black and magenta, but the austerity is offset by a down to earth artistic style of illustration and engaging, conversation prose.Normally, I'm pretty skeptical about fashion books for girls. This one, I would consider giving to a girl.It encourages readers to actually make things rather than look at glossy picture. There are a wide range of ideas for drawing, some things to cut out, and ideas for projects for the readers. It's not tied to a marketing campaign. Many fashion books are tied to a specific brand of clothes or toys. This one is not.It enourages readers to come up with their own ideas, rather than accept the interpretations of the authors and their product placement. It surveys a broad range of cultural influences and eras. Ancient, modern,... 4/5 E. M. Van Court "Van, emvc (at) lycos.com" (Honolulu, Hawai'i, USA) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2009

The most beautiful coloring book for children and adults

I am a 29-year-old graphic designer who works at a fashion house. I saw this book featured on a blog and immediately rushed over to amazon.com to purchase it. A tremendous amount of talent and creativity went in to creating each page. Some of the spreads are absolutely beautiful - i.e., the gloves, the shoes, the flowers...Nina is an amazingly talented illustrator - you may not like her style, but that's just what it is: her style.I highly recommend this book, because it goes above and beyond what one might expect from a coloring book. 5/5 Brenda "designgirl" (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A good book for girls interested in fashion...

It says here this book is for ages 8 and up but I feel like it should be for older children myself. It has black and white pictures of clothes, shoes, accessories, etc that your child can color in and fashion their own designs. There's even a page of different button shapes...although I thought that page didn't include a good representation of buttons in general. The page with bows was much better. It even encourages your child to seek out old patterns for ideas, which I thought was neat. The page with the different stitches was also rather generic and you will have to illustrate this to your child yourself.Overall, I think the book is really neat and any girl interested in fashion will enjoy putting her ideas into play using this book. I also think mom will enjoy helping her along with her project! 4/5 Judy Smith "judylynnsbooks" (jamestown, ky United States) - See all my reviews, December 1, 2009

Read this book, just so you can do the opposite

I have a small fashion label that launched last year. To begin, I invested approximately $15,000 in the sewing, fabrics and labor, and another $5,000 in advertising, most of which I do myself. I do not employ a production manager as is insisted on in this book. I do not have a twenty step process that requires a dozen middle-people and unneeded management. It is me- the designer, a contract sewing company and me and my husband doing the advertising. It is hard work, but the point is that doing this, we make very good profits even the first year. If I employed this author's advice, I would have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars (which I do not have) on pretty much nothing. My clothing is sold in the US, UK and by Fall of 2012 we plan to have shops in Panama and Rio De Janeiro.A few notes:I can't sew. I hate sewing. I have a good eye for design and design what I think are great clothes. Others think so too and they buy them.I am not an artist. Not impressed.

Extremely disappointed with this book. Rather than focusing on the struggles, adversities, drawbacks, and the unhappiness of being a designer, I'd rather invest my time in a text which offers concrete instruction on how to overcome the obstacles. This book is premised upon the "facts" that you: a) require hundreds of thousands of dollars in reserve to even consider launching your own line, b) MUST work for several years under another designer prior to designing for yourself, and c) you most likely won't make it, even on a small scale. Every artist is aware of monetary limitations and minuscule success rates, so I believe most of us would benefit more from tangible advice, and an author who can offer various routes to achieve discernible goals (rather than abstract ideas and incessant "words of warning"). A few good points throughout the book, but I wouldn't recommend it. 2/5 msb - See all my reviews This review is from: The Fashion Designer Survival Guide, Revised and Expanded Edition: Start and Run Your Own Fashion Business (Paperback) Extremely disappointed with this book. A Review from a soon-to-be Fashion Designer.

I will admit-- I chose this "how to start a fashion business" guide book over the other ones because it's more famous. And because of the Diane Von Furstenberg foreword, Tim Gunn review, and many little interviews with actual designers. Lets not forget the great price (w/ free shipping if $25 is spent). This book is definitely a good read-- its full of practical information and great advice and real-world examples of situations designers go through (designers going bankrupt, exclusivity of certain production factories, problems with selling to certain stores, etc). Its a very "real" look at fashion from a well thought out point of view. All that said, when I began to create my business plan this book was little help. I mean it certainly gave me a great summarized outline, but it lacks numbers. I just wish it had more number examples, you know more "averages". Like the average or sample amounts of material cost, production, and overhead cost for an emerging... 4/5 Jane Tompkins - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) As someone in the industry, I wish I'd known some of what I am reading now in Ms. Iverson's "In Fashion" when I was just starting out. Also a very fun read and I love the final chapter with all the do's/dont's lists. On the other hand, this isn't just a book for someone who wants to break into the fashion industry. I am a French woman living in the US and have been looking for a book to teach my teenage daughter all the things that French women know about dressing well. This is THE book. It has everything. It covers subjects that may be covered elsewhere such as body type and flattering style, fit, how to build a wardrobe, what to invest in and what to have fun with. What I found most valuable, though, was how the author dispels the myths that fashion magazines promote. For example, she tells you how she prepares for a photoshoot and erases the myth of effortless good looks. She advocates that looking good is not about wearing the latest fashion, but knowing what makes you look good and wearing it. She outlines a basic wardrobe of timeless high quality basics that flatter and supplement with trendier and cheaper items that are fun but will not last as long in your wardrobe. This is how I dress and I can testify that it works.I will be for ever grateful to my grandmother for teaching... 5/5 Jocelyne "French lady" (Pittsburgh, PA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Pocket Stylist: Behind-the-Scenes Expertise from a Fashion Pro on Creating Your Own Look (Hardcover) I am a French woman living in the US and have been looking for a book to teach my teenage daughter all the things that French women know about dressing well. A book every woman who wants to look her best should own

In the sea of so called 'fashion experts', Farr is a real standout. Her approach to style differs greatly in that it instructs women how to honestly assess their wardrobes and logically pinpoint their individual body type. She clarifies how to flatter any figure (including plus sizes), incorporate trends and individual style, mix and match pieces, shop on a budget and avoid falling victim to common fashion mishaps. The book isn't limited to just clothing - bras, stockings accessories and tips from beauty experts are also thoroughly covered. Best of all there are pages and pages of tips, places to shop and stylist secret weapons that even the most fashion savvy girl probably doesn't know. My favorite section of the book is 'Your Tailor is Your Best Friend' which details everything from having a garment fit to having a piece custom made. Unlike other guides I have read, this book is written without condescension and truly aims to make all women feel beautiful and stylish. Very useful, very informative

Perhaps the single most vital thing I learned from this book is the all important shoulder to hip ratio and definition of waist that determines what shape you are. I myself, and countless other women tend to be so obsessed with perceived huge hips that we all dress like pears and wonder why we look lopsided. As someone with shoulders in proportion to my hips and a very defined waist, I should have been dressing very differently. What this book will tell you:1. This book will tell you how to dress for your specific body type, including fabrics and lengths that will look best on you.2. It will give you ideas on indispensibles, including where to buy them, where to splurge and where to skimp. It will also tell you how to go bargain hunting without looking like you did.3. It will tell you how best to work with your tailor, what is possible, what is not.4. I am not a plus sized woman, but if I was, this book would be a godsend in... 5/5 imported beer "henotheist" (Chicago) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
